Have you heard of a neutral spine?

In the spine, there are natural curvatures and over time, we tend to lose them.  Often times this is due to poor posture but I see this a lot in poor training habits.

Most people say deadlifting or squatting is bad for your back but sitting with a poor spinal position can be damaging too!

This is why you need to learn how to control your spine and this is where a neutral spine comes in.

This neutral spine position is one that maintains the curvatures of your spine that is without tension, discomfort, or pain.

Everyone is different and everyone will have a different position within the spine, so don’t copy someone else position.

When finding a neutral spine, you will want to find a position that maintains all the good positions of the neck, mid-back, and low back.

To do this:

  1. Get onto your hands and knees and do some cat/cows.
  2. Find out what full flexion and full extension feel like.
  3. Find a position in between that feels “neutral” but maintains the lumbar spine curvature WITHOUT tension, or discomfort!
  4. Now make sure your entire spine is comfortable & in a good position.
  5. That’s it!

The hard part is that you will have to find or practice this for weeks! Then you’ll have to learn how to move in this position, then learn how to weight lift with the spine in this position.

This is one of the most important keys to helping fix low back pain but the big problem is that there is no neutral spine in sports…

This means you can fix your back but soon as you get to sports activities, it may cause your back pain to come back.

The good news is that for now, you should focus on this.  Remember, one step at a time.
