The cold hard truth is that most people will FAIL at there goals that they set out to do. Yes, I know it sounds a bit negative at first but the reason I am telling you this is because after working with thousands of people over the last 7-8 years I have began to recognize a pattern of what successful people do to achieve there goals and what happens to those who fail. By the time you are done with this you will have a better understanding of what you can do to be more successful this year!
My Quick Story
My goal for this year was to expand my business and for me business has never came easy. I didn’t know how to start doing this, where to go, what to do and I didn’t have anyone to help me. So what did I do? I paid to go to an elite seminar (which was outside my comfort zone) and then I hired a life & business coach! To be straight up honest, it was expensive, I was unsure about it and I was scared to invest in such a large expense without immediate results!
On the other hand knew that my goal and purpose was so strong and I knew that I had to make a change in many ways. Fast forward several months, this was one of the best experiences I have ever done and my business has grown and to be honest, I don’t really know how to put all the results I had into words. Working with a hired professional has truly shaped my mindset and has made me help a lot more people.
Below is a quick step-by-step guide you can use to help goal set a bit easier. I have used some of the information from my coaching to help you create a better way to list your goals!
· Write it down – if you are unwilling to write it down, then your goal is already not important enough. You likely have heard this before and you may have ignored it but a study done on Harvard graduates showed that people who wrote down their goals were 97% more likely to achieve them. Make sure you can not only write them down but see them often!
· Be as specific as possible – The whole “I want to go to the gym” or “ I want to lose 15 pounds” is a terrible goal. Why? You lack specificity. Why do you want to lose 15 pounds, why do you want to go to the gym, and WHY do you have this goal? You must make the goal specific and tie it to your emotions. It truly has to mean something to you and should trigger an emotional response. Essentially, it is your PURPOSE. If you lack purpose, you will find a way to divert your time and energy away from the goal.
Example: I want to lose 15 pounds of body fat by March 1st, 2018 so that I can start to live a healthier lifestyle, look better, feel better, have more energy, and be more productive in my personal life.
You can see in this example that I was specific about body fat (not losing water weight), a time frame, and the reason why someone should want to lose the weight. Also, notice that I did not put “so I can stop feeling like crap” or anything negative. Always use positive language.
· Identify the barriers – Nobody is perfect and at sometime you will encompass something that will prevent you from doing what you set out to do. It is important to realize that there will always be an obstacle ahead of you. Start to point it out now so you know what to do when you approach this dead end!
What will possibly get in your way of success? Is it fear, comfort, a family member, the lack of knowledge, sleep, your own health? Just know that there is always a solution and if your persistent enough you will accomplish it. If you really don’t know where to start you may need to hire a professional!
· Don’t be afraid to invest – Likely the most important thing I learned this year was that many successful people in the world ALWAYS do one thing that separates them from many others! They INVEST in themselves. People looking to gain better health invest in better nutrition, exercise plans, gym memberships, etc. You cannot go wrong with self-investment because no matter what the outcome, you will learn something valuable! We know that not all investments are financial and some of these experiences are critical in getting you to the next step or phase of your life.
I hope this helps you shape better goals for 2018 and never forget to invest in yourself and book am appointment today!
